7 Learning Strategy Tips for 2022
Connect your learning to a business goal, then be relentless in measuring its impact
Are there metrics in the business that your program can support? If your program is a success, will employee engagement scores go up? Other metrics to consider: employee health & wellbeing, retention, attraction, sales, financial, etc.
Target communications to your learner’s manager
Help managers understand the importance of making time and space for their people to learn. Provide a snapshot of what their people are learning and encourage learning check-ins during regular 1:1s. Ask managers to provide coaching and grace to encourage the application of new skills.
Get to know your learners
How much time can they reasonably dedicate to learning? How do they access learning? When is their ideal time of the day to learn? What type of learning modalities work best for them?
Give your learners a choice
Your learner’s time is valuable and it’s never been harder to hold their attention. Give flexibility and choice to allow for different preferences and learning styles. As you build the learning strategy, consider including: Podcasts, eLearning's, videos, job aids, discussion forums, application activities, virtual coffee connections, coaching, etc. One size does not fit all.
Foster a community of support
People enjoy learning from others... especially reliable, expert sources. Can you support learning with communities on MS Teams, LinkedIn, Yammer, Discord, etc.? Look for ways to use your learning program to help build and foster a sense of community.
Make it easy to find and apply
You will lose your learners, if you waste their time navigating complex systems. You will create frustration if you require learners to take a training that is not supported with application. Know that your competition is YouTube, TedTalks, LinkedIn Learning, etc. Consider embracing your competition as a part of your learning strategy. Then, make sure learners are supported when trying new skills.
Communicate the impact of your programs to stakeholders to boost credibility
Identify and manage your stakeholders. Consider ways you can communicate the impact of your programs for the learner and for the business. Think like a salesperson and showcase the success your programs are having on the business.
