Is Instructional Design Still Relevant?
Yes! I’d argue that it’s more important than ever.
We live in a time where content has never been easier to access. Anyone can create it and anyone can share it.
Content can be accessed from almost any device, at almost any time.
But how do you ensure the content being consumed changes behavior?
I’d argue that you won’t - unless you partner with an Instructional Designer. Instructional Designers analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate learning experiences to make sure they improve skill and change behavior.
Here’s a personal example.
I’ve spent the last four years studying Emotional Intelligence (EI). I know the “in’s” and “out’s.”
I consumed a ton of content from books, articles, courses, and podcasts.
I worked with a coach, who helped me move my EI scores from low to high.
I intentionally apply what I learn in daily conversations with family, friends, and colleagues.
I spend time reflecting and getting feedback.
BUT, can I apply these skills correctly - on the spot - during a tough conversation?
The answer is…………not 100% of the time.
How can I increase my performance and get closer to 100%?
I can practice realistic situations in a safe environment.
I can be observed in that safe environment to see how well I’m managing my emotions, facial expressions, body language and reactions.
The practice environment needs to be meaningful, relevant, and linked to the overall objectives.
That’s how an Instructional Designer thinks.
And, that is why Instructional Design is more important than ever. Traci
